ROVING REPORT NO 46

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: ITN 169).

Synopsis

Report examines the reaction of white Rhodesians to Ian Smith's rejection of Wilson's proposals for an independence settlement and also shows that the effect of sanctions on the standard of living of Smith's supporters has so far been negligible.

Crowds waited all day to hear Smith surrounded by his ministers announce his rejection of the British proposals. Prospect of harsher sanctions does not worry white Rhodesians who are as defiant and confident as their leader and believe that South Africa will continue to support their cause. This optimistic outlook is shared by two British settlers, one the prosperous owner of a Salisbury camera shop who, seated by his swimming pool and waited on by servants, declares "No one has suffered since UDI", and the other who is happy in the knowledge that Africans in Rhodesia are better off than in other parts of the continent. Nationalists in restriction camps would dispute this, and Africans interviewed in a township call for a constitutional conference to give them majority rule.
