ROVING REPORT - CYPRUS OBSERVED

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: ITN 20).

Synopsis

A tourist's impression of Cyprus.

Racial diversity of Nicosia is suggested by views of the municipal market where the reporter has a shave: Turkish minarets, statue of Kemal Ataturk, Turkish town hall, and the American, Greek Orthodox, Roman Catholic and Anglican churches. A drive through the countryside and Troodos Mountains reveals barren pastures, traditional village life and the mining of copper and asbestos. Gothic cathedral and Othello's Tower in the Venetian citadel at Famagusta, Curium ruins, castle of St Hilarion and its Byzantine chapel are further evidence of the island's ancient and racially confused history. Tour of island ends at Kyrenia harbour and beach, the whole report having been artificially framed around the barber's shop in Nicosia's market.
