ROVING REPORT - GIBRALTAR

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: ITN 3).

Synopsis

Report shows why the inhabitants of Gibraltar and Britain's defence staff wish the colony to remain British.

Mayor of Gibraltar traces the racial history of the Rock's inhabitants and concludes that they are definitely not Spaniards. Other people interviewed reject Spain's claim to Gibraltar, even though the colony is dependent on her neighbour for labour and fresh food and has to mount a day and night guard at La Linea. A member of the Legislative Council nominated by the Governor would like Gibraltar to attain independent status within the Commonwealth. Governor and C-in-C of the colony Lieutenant General Sir Harold Redman speaks of the strategic important of the Rock which is emphasised by its fortress-like appearance, RAF landing strip, visiting HMS Delight and much military ceremonial. This includes the passing-out parade of the Gibraltar Defence Force, a march past by the band of the Royal Sussex Regiment and the Ceremony of the Keys. Future of Gibraltar as a British colony appears secure.
