ROVING REPORT - KUWAIT

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: ITN 34).

Synopsis

Report shows how Britain's prompt response to Kuwait's request for military assistance has apparently saved this wealthy state from invasion by Iraq.

C-in-C Air Marshal Sir Charles Elworthy describes the rapid build-up of planes and troops after Premier Kassem's declaration that Kuwait was an inseparable part of Iraq. British troops who have just flown in describe their reactions to the weather. Political implications of the crisis are revealed in an interview with the Sheikh's Secretary of State who recalls that under the terms of a new agreement with Britain Kuwait can call on her for help. (Britain's interest is fixed on the Kuwait Oil Company which provides 40% of British supplies). A UN delegation is at present studying how to diversify the base of Kuwait's economy using her oil revenues. Secretary of State's assurance that the British troops will be evacuated as soon as the crisis is over appears to discredit Nasser's suggestion that the intervention was a British plot designed to strengthen Britain's stranglehold on Kuwait's oil.
