ROVING REPORT - KENYATTA AND KENYA

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: ITN 36).

Synopsis

Report on the political outlook in Kenya following the release from detention of Jomo Kenyatta.

Kenyatta is described as the undisputed leader of Kenya's six million Africans although the split between the two main parties KANU and KADU will deprive him of some support when Kenya becomes independent, probably next year. Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasury praises his understanding of the African mind and his realisation that Kenya requires a consensus form of rule rather than Westminster-style majority government. His political ideals are 'very very democratic". Settlers reaction to the nationalist who will control Kenya's future is strong but divided and remarkable for its rapid evolution. One MP (Peter Marion) who altered his opinion on meeting Kenyatta calls him "a very big man indeed" and a constructive and cohesive force in African politics. Kenyatta's assurances on security, unity and employment are not however believed by Cavendish-Bentinck who deplores his release and warns that he will cause "very grave difficulties". Film shows Kenyatta receiving a rapturous greeting from singing and dancing Africans after his release.
