ROVING REPORT - GHANA TO GAMBIA : the royal tour of West Africa

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: ITN 45).

Synopsis

The Royal tour of West Africa, taking in Ghana, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Gambia.

Report ignores the political controversy which the visit aroused and concentrates on formal ceremonies, displays of tribal dancing and flag-waving children and adults. Queen and Prince Philip arrive at Accra airport where they are welcomed by President Nkrumah and his wife and many tribal chiefs. Highlights of this visit include an armed forces display in Black Star Square; surf-boat race; state dinner at which Nkrumah speaks of the "personal regard and affection which we in Ghana have for Your Majesty", to which the Queen replies by referring to the Commonwealth as a family of friends linked together by respect and affection; durbars at Tamale and Kumasi; Accra Turf Club race-meeting; ball for 3000 and fireworks; then departure from Takoradi on board the Royal Yacht. Brief stop at Monrovia lets Queen meet President Tubman and drive in a motorcade, then on to Freetown and another motorcade, a meeting with some Sierra Leone women at the Governor General's residence, visit to Parliament, tour of diamond mine and finally another warm welcome in Gambia.
