ROVING REPORT -

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: ITN 5).

Synopsis

Report on the Bahamas Islands focuses on the colony's precarious dependence on tourism (95% American) and includes an interview with the leader of the Opposition Progressive Liberal Party.

Playground image (water-skiing, yachting, performing flamingoes) is deceptive. Last winter tourist season was badly affected, according to a hotelier, by a general strike, bad weather and a recession in the USA. Lynden Pindling examines the colony more closely and describes the racial discrimination, limited male franchise based on property qualifications, and underdevelopment (only industries are tourism, tortoise shells and straw-hats). He would like the Bahamas to enjoy universal suffrage and self-government and to have its own light industries. A Royal Commission should investigate, otherwise "the situation may erupt into something ugly." His criticisms go unanswered by the ruling white party leaders, who refuse to be interviewed, and are evaded by the editor of the Nassau Daily Tribune who describes both parties as extremist.
