ROVING REPORT -
This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: ITN 82).
Synopsis
Interviews with a district commissioner, oil executive, student union leader and girl teacher form the basis of this report on the attitudes of African Kenyans outside politics who are typical of the people who will gradually take over the running of their country after independence.
District commissioner is seen attending a police parade and then explaining to a mass meeting of Africans their rights and responsibilities in the forthcoming elections. He discusses the suggestion that tribalism is a problem and speaks confidently of the transition from European administration. Resale manager for Shell-BP is equally sure that racial imbalance in commerce will gradually tilt towards the Africans as more become qualified and says that Kenya's main aim will be to create a stable society which will attract investors. The student and teacher are confident of the power of education to change and develop Kenyan society and both favour the continuance of technical aid which only resident Europeans can provide. The girl touches on the problem of the emancipation of women which uneducated Africans and uncivilised white women resist.
