Cavalry and Infantry marching past on a grassy parade ground, South Africa, 1900

The parade starts and ends with contingents of light horse. In between them are foot soldiers, two companies each with a Maxim gun on a hand cart. All the men are in slouch hats and shirtsleeve order.

Technical: this item is currently held on a single reel with films IWM 1081b-g, the can is marked as IWM 1081

Remarks: despite the title, there were no Colonial forces sent to South Africa intended as Infantry, although some were sent to be given horses as Mounted Infantry. These are therefore probably local South African recruits, referred to confusingly by the British as 'Colonials'
