the WORLD'S GREATEST STORY - EPISODE 9

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: IWM 420-17+18).

Synopsis

A thematic treatment of the Zeebrugge raid and of General Allenby's entry into Jerusalem, 1918.

(Reel 17) The episode starts with 'Justice'. Thereafter the first part is a re-edited version of IWM 303 GERMAN NAVAL INACTIVITIES and IWM 358 ZEEBRUGGE, showing German sailors in Ostend prior to the raid on Zeebrugge, and the aftermath of the raid itself. Seaplanes "vigilantly observing from above while the Vindictive, Iphigenia and Thetis proceed on their way" (the ships shown are HMS Birmingham and HMS King Edward). The harbour in the aftermath shows SS Brussels and HMS Vindictive blocking the mouth. (Reel 18) The next part is mixed images from Palestine and Mesopotamia, including the Imperial Camel Corps and HMS Moth. It is built around a re-edit of IWM 13 GENERAL ALLENBY'S ENTRY INTO JERUSALEM. Jewish men and women (described as Moslem) are shown praying beside the West Wall ('Wailing Wall') of the Temple in Jerusalem. The episode ends with a British team involved in a football match in a stadium, possibly north Italy.
