Synopsis

At the Municipal Building in Singapore, the new Governor General of Malaya, Malcolm MacDonald, is installed, and Malay gunners fire a salute.

Various angles of a battery of Ordnance QF 25-pounder field guns firing a salute, with a close-up of the Battery Sergeant Major Aman Hitam. Very long shot of MacDonald and others leaving the Municipal Building with guard of honour of 2nd Battalion Durham Light Infantry formed up on the padang. Spectators, including a police officer with 'SSP' (Straits Settlements Police) epaulette.

Malcolm MacDonald, previously High Commissioner to Canada from 1941, was Governor General of Malaya until 1955, when he became High Commissioner to India. He presided over Malaya's turbulent transition to federal government, in a period of great upheaval both in Malaya and more widely in south east Asia.
