Synopsis
For the first time since the end of the war, a parade is mounted in Singapore to mark the King's birthday, and Sir Franklin Gimson, Governor of Singapore, takes the salute.
Wide shot looking out over the padang in front of the Municipal Building, Singapore, with crowd, troops on parade and Gimson's car moving slowly left-to-right. Royal Air Force Spitfire fighters pass overhead. Crowd and parade giving three cheers for the King. Men on the balcony of the Municipal Building saluting. Gimson climbs the steps and takes a seat. Lieutenant-General Sir Montagu Stopford, commander Allied Land Forces South East Asia joins him. Various seated officers and civil officials (?); one (French?) officer appears to be wearing a kepi. Gimson et al at the salute; pan to band playing and the head of the march past, led by Major-General Lionel Cox (commander, Singapore District) passing. Troops of the Royal Navy, Royal Scots and 1st Battalion Cameronians passing.
Notes
Though not seen in this film, the flypast also included RAF Mosquito aircraft, and Royal Navy vessels in the harbour fired a salute. The vessels included HMS Belfast, now a museum ship and branch of the Imperial War Museum.
