PATIALA FAREWELL PARADE AT BATAVIA

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: JFU 650).

Synopsis

At Batavia, capital of the Netherlands East Indies, the 1st Battalion Patiala Infantry (Indian State Forces) mount a farewell parade before returning to India, and Major-General Hawthorn (commander 23rd Indian Division) takes the salute.

Brief shot of Major-General Hawthorn and Lieutenant-Colonel Bikradev Singh. Hawthorn takes the salute. Hawthorn, with large escort, inspects the parade. Wide shots of the parade. Band playing. Hawthorn shakes hands with Jemadar Sarwan Singh MC. Medium close-up Singh. More shots of the inspection. Hawthorn on saluting base. He presents (a scroll?) and a (Japanese?) sword. Three cheers for General Hawthorn. March past with the band leading. Men passing.

Notes

Patiala, in the Punjab region of India, was a princely state and so these troops were Indian State Forces rather than a part of the Indian Army. The cameraman's dopesheet describes briefly their service on the North West Frontier, on the Indo-Burma border and then in Burma proper. With the end of the war the battalion saw action in Java around Buitenzorg and Bandoeng (Bandung).
