Synopsis
Reel 1: River traffic near a rice mill; a tall chimney smokes in the background. People carrying baskets of rice from boats. Scooping rice up from the hold. People carrying baskets to a warehouse (or godown); each man takes a small stick as a token as they enter. Carrying rice into the warehouse. Interior rice mill; man tosses rice on a wicker tray. Man running rice through his hands at a machine. Close-up of the rice. Milling machine. Very dark shot of men with baskets. Men carrying sacks and carrying them to a waiting boat. The sacks are put aboard. Panning view from a high point overlooking the Rangoon River with shipping. Views of shipping. Ships with local boats. Small steamer passing. Views from the water as the cameraman's vessel passes a freighter. Loading a ship from smaller boats alongside. Hoisting sacks aboard. Back at the riverside rice mill a boat is unloaded; there is a steel bridge in the background. A neatly composed shot of labourers unloading the boat, the bridge behind and a tree in the foreground. More unloading. In the hold of a ship sacks are lowered in. Sacks seen in the pool of light formed by the open hold hatch.
Reel 2: On board the ship sacks are hoisted aboard; they appear to be marked 'CASB' (Civil Affairs Service (Burma)). Standing in the hold local stevedores carry sacks away; they quickly disappear in the darkness. Man operating a deck winch. More shots of sacks being hoisted aboard. View of the Rangoon River with ship heading off downstream.
In Rangoon, capital of Burma, rice is milled before being sent by river to waiting ships for export.
Notes
The dopesheet for this film notes that this film was shot specially for the Special Commissioner South East Asia, Lord Killearn. Killearn was charged with coordinating the food supply across the region, which had been severely disrupted by the war.
