EAST AFRICAN TROOPS MOVING UP TO THE IRRAWADDY

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: JIN 1).

Synopsis

After the capture of Gangaw, East African troops advance towards the River Irrawaddy, Burma, while gunners go into action and RAF Hurricanes attack a village.

African troops walk along a road. A file of troops walks along a sunken lane or dry stream bed. African troops walk across a shallow stream. Other troops run across and some are carrying equipment (such as mortar ammunition carriers) on their heads. Two Chevrolet CMP lorries laden with troops cross the stream. A jeep and trailer drives into a stream. CMP lorries and Field Artillery Tractors (CMP FATs) cross a shallow river, some at speed. Troops walk across the same river. Another CMP lorry crosses the river. Thick white smoke billows from the ground, presumably from an artillery smoke shell. The smoke spreads. A CMP FAT towing an Ordnance QF 25-pounder field gun and limber slows to a halt. Gunners get their piece ready for action by removing covers. The gun is fired. Distant shot of troops, apparently Gurkhas under fire, advancing through thin scrub and across open ground. Shot of troops in the scrub. More footage of the 25-pounder being fired. Somewhat grey long lens (8") landscape view of a village under artillery fire. Long lens footage of airstrikes by RAF Hawker Hurricane fighter-bombers. Hurricanes passing overhead. Short shot of a soldier observing through binoculars. More footage of bombing and strafing.

Notes

The dopesheet for this film is rather vague as to details of units and locations. However, 11th East African Division were withdrawn from the front to Imphal in December 1944. These troops are therefore likely to be 28th East African Infantry Brigade, who were an independent brigade of 14th Army attached to IV Corps. On 2 February 1945 this brigade was part of a succesful deception operation designated 'Cloak', marching to Seikpyu on the Irrawaddy, in order to mislead the Japanese as to the site of IV Corps' crossing of the river. The identity of the artillery battery and the Gurkha unit, along with the name of the village seen being shelled and bombed, are unclear.

The dopesheet refers to the capture of 'Kangaw', but this is probably a misnaming of 'Gangaw' a village on the Myittha River (captured 10 January) where 7th Indian Division assembled in secret before making its drive on the Irrawaddy.
