This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: JIN 29).

Synopsis

Film by an American cameraman showing an amphibious landing at Ma-I chaung, part of the Letpan landings, in the Arakan coastal region of Burma.

Views of the chaung with smoke in the distance. Landing Craft Support Medium (LCSM) 30 passes. Hawker Hurricane fighter-bombers passing low over a treeline. ML 390 passes; a crewman plumbs the depth. Camera approaches the chaung bank and two officers step aboard. A Stinson Sentinel light aircraft in a field. A number of war correspondents (with 'war correspondent' epaullettes) stand about and their despatches are put aboard the aircraft. The aircraft takes off. Aerial views of the Ma-I chaung, of landing craft and launches and men ashore.

Notes

This operation forms part of the Letpan landings, in which 4th Indian Infantry Brigade (of 26th Indian Division) was landed to support operations against Japanese forces on the Arakan coast. Also an interesting and very rare glimpse of the way news was despatched from the front line.
