Synopsis
Troops of 4th Battalion, 15th Punjab Regiment (33rd Indian Brigade, 7th Indian Division) enter Myingyan, a town on the River Irrawaddy in Burma.
A 15th Punjab Regiment 3-inch mortar team set up in front of camera. Officer on field telephone from observation post; another gives the order to fire. Adjusting sights and firing one round. Wide shot in grounds of a pagoda; troops going forward through ruins and shattered trees towards a smoke screen. Men are seen to run forward through the smoke. Two Punjabi soldiers run forward. A stone monument with Japanese (kanji) script; an Indian officer looks at the script and consults a notebook. Troops going down a bomb-damaged main road through Myingyan. Panning shot of bomb damage and the shanty town the townspeople have built to escape the fighting.
Notes
The capture of Myingyan formed part of a series of operations to link up IV Corps, fighting at Meiktila, and XXXIII Corps, fighting at Mandalay. During this action, Lieutenant Karamjeet Singh Judge won the Victoria Cross. According to his citation, he 'dominated the entire battlefield by his numerous and successive acts of superb gallantry'.
