FALL OF PEGU TO 17TH INDIAN DIVISION
This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: JIN 66).
Synopsis
Indian troops of 17th Indian Division, supported by the fire of a battery of self-propelled 105mm guns, enter the town of Pegu 50 miles from Rangoon, capital of Burma.
A battery of 105mm Priest self-propelled guns of 18th (Self-Propelled) Field Regiment, Royal Artillery, seen firing. A gun named 'Chudleigh' is fired several times. Another gun possibly named 'Cape Town Castle'. A wideshot looking towards a distant treeline with drifting smoke; an occasional man or aircraft can be seen. Slight pan left; Sherman medium tanks drive along a road. A Stuart ('Honey') light tank (probably of 7th Light Cavalry) passes. Indian troops cross open ground towards the distant treeline; aircraft can be seen overhead. A Sherman tank passes crowded with men riding on top of its hull. More Shermans follow. More footage of Priest guns firing. A battery of Ordnance ML 3-inch mortars of 7th Battalion 10th Baluch Regiment in action. On a street in Pegu Indian Engineers fill in holes in the road. A Bren gunner in a foxhole protects the sappers. A building, apparently used as a firing position by Japanese snipers, seen on fire. A patrol of Gurkhas (probably of 1st Battalion 10th Gurkha Rifles) enters the town. A large sign reads 'Diversion to the Rangoon Road' and an arrow marked 'CMP' points to the left. A tank passes the sign followed by a variety of other military vehicles. View along the road shows a long line of vehicles passing the sign; one of the vehicles is an ambulance.
Notes
Pegu (now Bago) was the last major town on the road to Rangoon, and if its river could be bridged there would be nothing to stop IV Corps' advance on the city. In the event this could not be done before the unexpectedly early onset of the monsoon (which broke only a day or two after this film was shot).
Operations near Pegu were also filmed by a British Army cameraman. See related items.
