AMPHIBIOUS LANDINGS IN THE RAMREE AREA
This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: JIN 9).
Synopsis
Indian troops, probably of 26th Indian Division, board Royal Indian Navy landing craft from a beach at Ramree Island, off the Arakan coast of Burma, before making landings on Japanese-occupied islands to the south.
A Sherman medium tank of 19th Lancers slowly drives onto a landing craft; a man beckons the tank forward and the landing craft rocks as the tank weighs it down. The craft's ramp closes behind it. Indian troops leave a Landing Craft Assault (LCA). Troops leave a landing craft marked 'A18'; a stretcher case is carried off. A number of soldiers are wearing the 'ace of spades' patch of 25th Indian Division. On a beach on Ramree Island (at Kyaukpyu ?) Indian troops walk into the sea to board LCA 2111. A number of British soldiers board the landing craft, including a British captain. Footage from onboard the landing craft; an Indian soldier stands at the stern with swell behind. View of wet feet stepping aboard the landing craft. Looking over the gunwale of the landing craft's bow wave. Water at the stern. Troops off a landing craft; the first soldier off is a Bren gunner and another soldier appears to be carrying a live chicken. The ramp of LCA 2058 drops and troops disembark into knee-deep water. View from an LCA with 2058 alongside. View from a landing craft of troops disembarking in the distance. Troops move off the beach and disappear into a thick forest or jungle. View from landing craft with another LCA behind.
Notes
This film documents landings at more than one location. One of these is described as against a 'Japanese occupied island south of Ramree'. This would suggest either Cheduba island, Sagu Kyun or one of the smaller islets in the area. Sagu Kyun seems the most likely, but the shooting date is not quite right for either of them.
This film appears on the same reel as JIN 8, but the division between the two is not entirely clear. The length below therefore approximate.
