Synopsis

Compilation covers the Japanese raid on Ceylon and occupation scenes on Guam and Wake Island in the Pacific.

Carrier force at sea. Mitsubishi A6M2 is pushed on deck. Japanese pilots on board an aircraft carrier are briefed on deck before the attack on Trincomalee. Mitsubishi A6M2s and Nakajima B5N2s start up and take off. Aichi D3A1 in flight. Bombs are dropped on Trincomalee harbour, where ships are visible (9 April). Three D3A1s in flight. Aerial view of HMS Hermes smouldering after attack, and HMAS Vampire (?) being bombed and sinking in sea still disturbed by evasive wake of destroyer. Bomber is visible in frame as bomb explodes by bow of destroyer. First title states "the total success in battle of the Imperial Navy from the outbreak of war until 20 January 1942" over table of losses suffered by British and American fleets and air forces: 1061 ships and 2274 planes, including breakdown into ship types: 8 battleships sunk and 5 seriously damaged, 6 aircraft carriers sunk, 15 cruisers sunk and 12 seriously damaged etc. Map shows lines radiating out from Japan towards Northern Australia, and title "Construction of base proceeding at Guam Island". Aerial view of cliffs and town on coast. Shore view of Standard Oil petrol tanks and drums. Pan over large geometrically planned town on coast. "The tomb of great Japanese Navy ---" on stand outside two-storeyed building. Torpedo and defused depth charge stand on display outside. Outside a medical centre surrounded by palm trees, a native patient is wheeled in a chair. Doctor examines patient. Inside a classroom a naval teacher stands in front of a board giving instruction in Japanese. Outside boys and girls do exercises. Island inhabitants work in fields near houses. "The entrance of Ohmiya Shrine" on sign near palm trees. "Strong defense at Ohtori Island (former American colony)" over map. Aerial view of Wake Island airfield and ground views of battered gun emplacements, wrecked American plane and many petrol drums. Japanese flag now flies over airfield. "The tomb of Naval troop leader the late Mr Uchida" on Japanese signpost follows a signpost in English indicating distances: Guam 1510m, Midway 1190m, Manila 3105m, Honolulu 2495m, Hong Kong 3809m, San Francisco 4896m, Singapore 4645m. Japanese officers inspect defences on island, including a machine gun post equipped with a captured US water-cooled Browning and watchtower overlooking the coast.
