Synopsis

Compilation shows the Japanese attack on and occupation of New Guinea, the bombing of Darwin, the occupation of the Andaman Islands and the carrier action off Colombo.

"Capture of New Guinea". Japanese task force in line ahead includes freighters, destroyers and heavy cruisers. Artist on board paints the scene. Porthole view of Katori Class cruiser. Map of New Guinea and Australia precedes animation of bombing of Port Moresby and capture of Lae and Salamaua. Japanese pass along coast through jungle and palm trees. Soldier writes something on tree trunk. Hangars and planes on airfield stand damaged after air raid. Japanese flag flies over settlement on coast, with ships off shore. "Fierce bombing of Port Darwin", then map shows area between Japan and Northern Australia. Squadron of Mitsubishi G4Ms prepares to take off from airfield where comrades wave farewell. Take-off, in flight and cockpit views include shot of crew eating with chopsticks. Wireless operator taps out message. Formation passes over coast and releases bombs on Darwin airfield. "Indian Ocean area. Andaman Islands occupied, 13 March." Islands lie off Burma. Japanese forces come ashore in a launch, as Mitsubishi F1M2 passes overhead. Japanese (pretend to) assault beach. Union Jack lies on ground and captured Lee Enfields are in pile. Parade by triumphant Japanese. Japanese fraternise with Indian locals. Street scenes with Japanese flag flying. "The Victory Song is loud in the Indian Ocean, 5 April." Map of sub-continent and Ceylon. Two aircraft carriers at sea, with Hiryu with distinctive port island to right of frame and probably sister carrier Soryu to left. Camera ship is Akagi, with heavy side flak visible. Mitsubishi A6M fighters on deck at dusk. Plane is started by crank and takes off. Squadron of Nakajima B5N2s takes off, and in flight presumably heading for Colombo. Naval battle rages as a merchant ship smoulders and sinks.
