Synopsis
Part 1, filmed between 16 and 22 December 1943: Auchinleck meets officers of the 6th Rajputana Rifles. He sees men at training on a firing range. Inspecting armoured cars. Mules led past for inspection. Meeting Indian veterinary troops; Auchinleck meets a Viceroy's Commissioned Officer (Indian Army Veterinary Corps (IAVC) epaulette) who served four years in France during the First World War. Meeting other IAVC troops and seeing their veterinary medicines. Rubbing down animals and speaking to a British officer. An Indian soldier makes chappatis. Inspecting mules. Painting badge 'Peshawar Signals'; tilt up. Wiring demonstration on miniature telegraph poles. At the Indian Combined Military Hospital he meets patients. Parade ground; meeting officers (of 9th Jat Regiment ?). Meeting officers of 8th Punjab Regiment. High shot looking down on two ranks of troops on parade; an Avro Anson passes low overhead. Auchinleck meets officers of 2nd Patiala Infantry (Indian State Forces). Troops on firing range; as Auchinleck goes to inspect targets an RAF Vultee Vengeance passes low overhead. Troops crawl through a ditch as Auchinleck watches. Obstacle course; crossing a gap; an Indian soldier with dangling Bren gun uses a rope. Inspecting men and camels of a camel company. Inspecting female Indian personnel of the Women's Army Corps (India) (WAC(I)). At Landi Kotal Auchinleck speaks to Captain Surium Singh (of a Punjab Regiment) and presents him with a Card of Commendation for service during the 'Hurs trouble' (from the dopesheet). Mules. At an Indian Mountain Battery he inspects men and guns. He meets troops of a Nepalese contingent; they practice their river crossing with a rubber dinghy. Nepalese soldier. Auchinleck, with field glasses, at the Khyber Pass. Looking out into Afghanistan; tunnels can be seen in the background and camera pans left to look into Afghanistan. Close-up Auchinleck. Pan of the terrain from the Khyber Pass. Troops (of 2 Kashmir Regiment?) sitting on the ground with maps at Thal. Man running with a mule. Man (part of a mortar detachment?) using arms to signal by semaphore. Troops marching in background as Auchinleck speaks to Indian officer; they halt. Indian soldier practices bayonet fighting. At an airfield with parked Hawker Hurricanes in the background Auchinleck meets Air Commodore Hunter, Wing Commander Mukerjee and others. Inspecting Indian Air Force personnel. Part 2, filmed on 25 December 1943: Joe E Brown on stage, which is decorated with China-Burma-India theatre badges. Various angles and close-ups. Woman in the audience. Two-part film showing (1) A visit by General Sir Claude Auchinleck, Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army, to the North West Frontier of India, where he inspects troops, awards medals and visits the Khyber Pass, and (2) American comedian Joe E Brown entertains British and American service personnel in Delhi on Christmas Day 1943.
Notes
The 'Hurs trouble' referred to by the dopesheet, and for service related to which Captain Singh is seen being commended, was a period of violent uprising in Sindh. British authorities resorted to a year of martial law with effect from June 1942 to June 1943.
