MOUNTBATTEN VISITS DUTCH DESTROYER AND BRITISH AIRCRAFT CARRIER IN TRINCOMALEE
This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: MWY 203).
Synopsis
Lord Louis Mountbatten, Supreme Allied Commander South East Asia, visits the naval base at Trincomalee, Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and meets sailors of a Dutch destroyer and a British aircraft carrier.
Mountbatten, with his back to camera, addressing sailors on board a Dutch destroyer. Pan of the audience; the film’s contrast is a bit excessive. Addressing. Mountbatten talking to officers. Meeting officers and ratings. More chatting. Mountbatten departing by motor launch. Brief shot Mountbatten apparently visiting a hospital. View of the harbour; pan to dockside with large numbers of local boats. Pans of the harbour. Assembled sailors on deck. Mountbatten arrives on deck. Walking on deck. Descending through a hatch. Mountbatten departing the Dutch ship by launch. Mountbatten arriving at another. Departing again. Mountbatten arriving. Meeting officers.
Notes
A rather disjointed and incoherent film.
Series note: The MWY series of films is believed to be part of a ‘pool’ of film received by the Government of India from various sources, including South East Asia Command, the Indian Inter-Service Public Relations Directorate, the Ministry of Information, and from Allied governments. This footage would have been considered for editing and release through the Indian Newsreel Parade; see INR series.
