Synopsis
At Jhelum in the Punjab, India (now Pakistan), Commander Peppe of the Royal Indian Navy receives bagpipes from the Indian Army's 1st Punjab Regiment, before watching the regiment training.
Commander Peppe, having just arrived at the parade ground, with Lieutenant-Colonel Kelly. The two walk to the parade ground. Parade ground; Kelly stands at a table with a number of bagpipes lying on it, troops on parade in the background and other officers, including Peppe, standing at various positions. Kelly speaking. Pan of troops on parade. Commander Peppe steps forward to receive the pipes. Peppe addresses the parade. He inspects a detachment of sailors. He inspects soldiers. Peppe takes the salute at a march past. He meets Indian officers. Close-up Kelly. Speaking to a senior Indian soldier in front of an artillery piece with a plaque Captured from the Turks...1915. Scenes of the troops training; men jump into a swimming pool in fighting order and swim across towards camera. They climb out out. The troops launch a wooden boat that they paddle across; the man in the bow is a havildar with a Thompson submachine gun and an armband marked 21. Demonstrating an improvised floatation device; two urns on sticks held upside down in the water. Laden man swimming. Sailors in an improvised boat. A raft carrying a stretcher. Another type of raft to carry a 2-pounder gun. Peppe watches the troops deploy a floating pontoon footbridge. Boxing match with shots of spectators. The sailors sit down to a meal. Peppe and sailors board a Universal carrier. Peppe and Kelly at the assault course. Man crosses a ravine with a rope. Men charge before jumping a trench. Man crosses a pit by crawling along two parallel ropes. Men charge into an anti-tank ditch and (struggle to climb) out the other side. Group of sailors; pan to a German tank. Soldiers leap from a brick wall and over a pit of fire before bayoneting mannequins. A burning target.
