Synopsis
"To Westminster - The Queen." HM Queen Elizabeth II undertakes the State Opening of Parliament, April 1966.
Newsreel cameras film the State Opening of Parliament for the first time. Among those also in attendance is Lord Montgomery, bearing the Sword of State. The Prime Minister Harold Wilson leads the government into the House of Lords alongside opposition leader Edward Heath. In the Lords, the Queen delivers her speech, which includes references to Vietnam, Rhodesia, road safety, local authority subsidies, and the the buying of homes by those of modest means.
