BRITISH MOVIETONE NEWS

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: NMV 292-3).

Synopsis

A general outline of officer training at RAF Cranwell which culminates in an appeal for recruits.

150 pupils, including citizens from the Empire (a turbaned Indian is visible in a parade), undergo a two-year training course before taking a stringent test, receiving their commissions and being posted to squadrons. Cadets are seen receiving classroom instruction in aero-engines, biplane rigging and fuselage structure, all part of their technical training. The specifically military part of the curriculum includes signalling practice and the correct fitting of bombs and guns to different types of planes as well as machine gun practice on a range. Fencing, rugger (rugby) and beagling (the College has its own pack) ensure that the cadets remain in good health. Commentary seems to be at some pains to convey the importance of this new branch of the defence forces (immaculate turnout, faultless parade, new imposing buildings, grand dining hall), which has recently trebled its number of squadrons and "therefore offers a wonderful opportunity for the youth of this country to take up a career in the Air Force on which our future peace and security depends."
