BRITISH MOVIETONE NEWS ISSUE 645 (16 OCTOBER 1941)

Synopsis

I. "Britain and Soviet meet in Iran." Indian troops having entered Iran north of Baghdad pass through Kermanshah before meeting Soviet troops near Kazvin. Russian officer fires Very light now that Allied front stretches from Arctic to Libya. All is quiet in Tehran after the departure of the Germans. Eagle emblem outside empty embassy, inexpensive portraits of Schiklgruber in a shop window. A Russian and Indian do joint sentry go as Allied ministers confer. Statue of Shah.

II. "American help in Iceland." US troops disembark in Iceland and supplies are unloaded. Major General Curtis, Commander of British forces on Iceland, meets US Major General Bonestell. Views of the island and its geysers which make laundering easy. Lone look-outs guard the island which "ensures that Lease Lend gets through."

III. "Britain beats off another invasion." Army manoeuvres designed to meet the threat of enemy invasion take place in Britain, observed by a delegation of Soviet Officers, General Brooke and Canadian General McNaughton. Soldiers on motorcycles and in Bren carriers speed across the country, enemy tanks are pelted with "grenades" (cartons) by soldiers behind a wall, then the troops are seen feeding.

IV. "New Hurricane on the warpath." Demonstration of the new Hurricane Mk II fitted with four cannon-guns. Plane takes off and engages in mock action against a Ju 88 with RAF markings. Camera-gun film of enemy shipping being strafed, allegedly by Hurricanes.
