BRITISH MOVIETONE NEWS ISSUE 746 (20 SEPTEMBER 1943)

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: NMV 746).

Synopsis

I. "Surrender." RN ships escort part of the surrendered Italian fleet to Malta, including the battleships 'Italia' and 'Vittorio Veneto'. Italian Admiral Da Zara comes ashore on the island to report to Admiral of the Fleet Cunningham. Item concludes with sea-level views of other Italian vessels at anchor off the island: battleships 'Andrea-Doria', 'Caio Duilio', the cruiser 'Eugenio di Savoia', the destroyer 'Artigliere' as well as other unidentified ships.

II. "Salerno." Day and night naval bombardment precedes the 5th Army landing at Salerno, described as one of the most daring attacks of the war. These "first newsreel pictures" show the task force at sea, then men and supplies pouring steadily ashore, but little indication of the fighting on the beach-head.
