BRITISH MOVIETONE NEWS ISSUE 763 (17 JANUARY 1944)

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: NMV 763).

Synopsis

I. "Snow holds up the Eighth." Deep snow hinders the 8th Army in Italy, covering equipment and tents and blocking the roads, which are seen being cleared by jeeps with snow-ploughs. Further difficulty arises as the snow thaws and troops sweep the slush away.

II. "Lorry assembly line for the Fifth." Elsewhere in Italy the weather is fine as crates containing trucks are unloaded in bright sunshine. Local Italians are employed by the Americans to assemble the vehicles, turning one truck out every 24 minutes. Men are seen in a queue receiving food.

III. "Papuans on the war front." Bare-torsoed Papuans stand on parade and practice shooting and artillery fire. They afterwards dance to the accompaniment of drums.

IV. "Action on the Burma front." "The Japanese have been halted but not yet defeated": troops of the Fourteenth Army fire artillery and mortars, then advance over a clearing towards a wood. Gurkhas and Sikhs form part of the force, which is well camouflaged as it moves forward to clear a road blocked by the Japanese. Only other sign of enemy presence is a Japanese soldier dead in a tree and another corpse pulled from a foxhole for identification.

V. "Massing for the Second Front." US troops disembark in Britain to the sound of a Sousa march, treading on a picture of Hitler. Departure by train.
