BRITISH MOVIETONE NEWS ISSUE 776 (17 APRIL 1944)

Synopsis

I. "The Brown Bomber." Staff Sergeant Joe Louis visits London and engages in some sparring practice with other boxers in the services.

II. "A memory of Pearl Harbour." The battleship USS Oklahoma which was damaged and capsized at Pearl Harbor is seen during salvage operations and afterwards in dry dock undergoing refitting.

III. "Far East War." Brief glimpses of action in the war against Japanese: a. Japanese dive-bombers are hit and crash into the sea as they attack a US force approaching the Marianas. b. USAAF Marauders bomb a base in New Guinea. c. In Burma supplies are carefully packed on the ground before being dropped from Dakotas by parachute to men of the 7th Indian Division. Film also shows a number of Japanese taken prisoner on the Arakan Peninsula.

IV. "Tirpitz bombed." FAA Barracudas are seen on their way to attack the Tirpitz in Altenfjord. Camera-gun film shows the battleship after being hit; reconnaissance stills confirm the actuality of this aerial assault. Barracudas and Corsairs return to land on a carrier deck against leaden skies.
