Synopsis

I. "Collapse of the Bridge." Engineers repair the Remagen Bridge over the Rhine shortly before its collapse. Film taken immediately after the collapse shows rescue operations under way, including a stretcher casualty being lifted from the buckled girders and men coming ashore from the swift-flowing river. Commentary states that bridgehead on the far side of the Rhine is secure.

II. "Fourteenth Army's triumph." Sherman tanks enter Mandalay, as Burmese peasants move along the road on bullock-drawn carts. Three Burmese men show the traces of the torture they suffered at Japanese hands. Officer speaks to a gathering of villagers about the new rule of law and justice which will replace the Japanese terror and torture; "in their impassive way they applaud the news." Display of Burmese dancing and boxing; an Indian soldier bashes his way to victory over the graceful Burmese pugilist. Mountbatten broadcasts his congratulations to his troops, mentioning the invaluable support the soldiers have received from their comrades in the air; last part of broadcast over film of a Sherman flying a captured Japanese flag moving through the jungle: "To all of you in every service - British, American, Indian, African and Chinese - grateful thanks."
