I. "Victory." As Big Ben strikes three o'clock, Churchill broadcasts a statement from his office: "Yesterday morning General Jodl and Admiral Doenitz signed the act of unconditional surrender... Hostilities will end at one minute past midnight on Tuesday 8 May." Large crowds outside Parliament and in Trafalgar Square rejoice at the news and press forward as the Speaker leads Churchill together with other Members to St. Margaret's for a Victory thanksgiving service. Citizens of Lambeth Walk celebrate with their local dance, while crowds jam the Mall and cheer when the Royal Family appears on the balcony of Buckingham Palace with Churchill. At night Trafalgar Square is thronged with jubilant crowds, some dancing, some in the fountains and others burning a bonfire in the darkness. At nine o'clock on VE-Day, George VI broadcasts a message to the people of Britain, the Empire and the Commonwealth "Today we give thanks to God for a great deliverance... In the Far East we have yet to deal with the Japanese, a determined and cruel foe."
