Synopsis
I. "Canadian-Built Lancaster."
I. RCAF crew under Squadron-Leader Maine (?) of first Canadian-built Lancaster emerges from bomber after nine-hour transatlantic flight to Britain.
II. "Brief Items News."
II. US Army nurses on leave in India go shopping in a bazaar and have hair styled. In Chester, Pennsylvania, USA, the Ford Motor Company wheels out 50,000th Combat Vehicle of the war, a Sherman tank. 250 US servicemen travel in triple-decker giant bus marked Colorado Springs. In Solomon Islands soldiers fire flamethrowers designed by the US Chemical Warfare Branch. General Eisenhower confers on General Montgomery ("not only united in military affairs, but are the closest of friends") the insignia of the Commander of the Legion of Honor.
III. "Fifteenth Army on the Southern Front."
III. British soldiers disembark at Salerno from landing craft, as German shells explode in sea. US signaller on beach. British advance along road to Battipaglia, as German prisoners are brought in. Former Italian commandant of Monte Corvino points out location of mines to Royal Engineers uncovering earth. Royal Artillery fire 25 pounder guns.
IV. "The St Leger."
IV. Servicemen are among crowd watching jockey Harry Wragg win the classic flat race (held at Newmarket in place of Doncaster) on Lord Derby's Herring Bone.
