WAR OFFICE OFFICIAL TOPICAL BUDGET 329-1
This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: NTB 329-1).
Synopsis
I. General Allenby and General Bailloud in Egypt.
I. 'THE VICTOR OF JERUSALEM. General Sir Edmund Allenby who has rescued the Holy City from Turkish domination, reviews one of our mounted brigades.' Aids hold General Bailloud's horse as he mounts. MS of Allenby on his horse. The two men ride off followed by their escort. LS of 7th Mounted Brigade, Desert Mounted Corps, drawn up for inspection - one officer's horse is rather frisky.
II. The King's car is mobbed by enthusiastic crowds when he visits a factory making military equipment.
II. 'ENTHUSIASTIC MUNITIONETTES. His Majesty receives a rousing welcome when he visits the Munition Works of Waring & Gillow.' A dense crowd of workers, many of them waving handkerchiefs, lines the route of the royal car. The crowd closes in after the car has passed and some difficulty arises when at one point the vehicle needs to reverse.
III. French troops arrive to support the Italians after the disaster at Caporetto.
III. 'MONSIEUR PAINLEVE AT BRESCIA. French and Italian troops fraternising at the station en route for the Front.' MCU of the French Prime Minister in conversation with an Italian officer, whose back is to the camera - the Italian gestures excitedly. A woman gives fruit (?) to two French soldiers sitting in the open door of a railcar - she also gives one of them a pamphlet (perhaps an improving tract). A woman and a boy distribute comforts to the troops. Train passes camera in a cloud of steam - Italians look on and wave at the soldiers in the boxcars. Flatbed wagons carry vehicles and canvas-covered guns - a surprisingly 'modern' scene. 'THE RUSH TO THE ITALIAN FRONT. A regiment of French Dragoons passing through the picturesque old City of Verona.' French cavalry pass through the city, watched by crowds of waving Italians - they pass through the Piazza Bra, the wall of the amphitheatre visible in the background. 'FRENCH HURRY TO THE PIAVE. Huge demonstrations in honour of the French battalions, who, along with British forces, are rushing to help Italy hold her frontier.' MS crowd scene - French and Italian soldiers shake hands. A lorry passes through the dense crowd. Enthusiastic Italians gather in front of Verona's town hall, and around an equestrian statue in the gardens in the centre of the piazza.
Notes
Summary (item I): a typically careless use of stock footage. From the coverage the uninformed would probably suppose that the obscure General Bailloud, commander of the Dtachment Francais de Palestine et de Syrie, was the conqueror of Jerusalem.
Summary (item II): just as all British troop movements were advances to the Topical Budget, all equipment factories were munition works. The 8,000 women employed by Waring and Gillow made tents and other canvas and leather items.
