Synopsis

Unedited material of RAF activity in Gibraltar. No combat footage.

Main subject is the Special Erection Party assembling Spitfires and test flights in mid-1942, prior to Operation Torch; for a shot by shot analysis see the dope sheet. Reels 7,11,13,15: assembly of Spitfires in the airfield beside the rock. Unpacking of fuselages, wings and propellers from crates. Reels 2,5,12: Spitfires on airfield, taking off, in flight with Rock in background and landing. Reels 3,4: ground-crews service Spitfires. Reel 6: shadow of the Rock falls over runway and sea beyond where ships lie at anchor. Reel 8: RN and merchant shipping moored in port. Interior of ops room: RN and RAF officers look at Enemy Sea Forces Board, showing U-boat positions 8th Jan. Reels 9,10: Hudson and Catalina on patrol over convoy. Reel 14: good views of the Rock through windscreen and windows of plane. Radar aerials on Rock; radar scanners rotating. Reel 16: construction of runway extension. Reel 17: Spanish buses, cabs and civilians cross airfield. Sunderland out of hangar into water. (Clapperboards indicate that this is USN material L17.)
