Synopsis

I. "They must see in the dark." Airmen selected for night flying undergo a series of eye tests and corrective exercises at an RAF ophthalmic centre.

II. "Stirlings in the making." Stirling towed out of hangar. Production scenes show the construction and assembly of planes including shots of the bomb floor, landing gear, fuel tank bay, wing assembly, riveting plates onto fuselage and fixing tail unit to body. Women predominate in the labour force and are said to be just as capable as men. Item is framed by foreman showing Stirling blueprint and specifications to colleague (live sound) - "it can get to Berlin and back". Stirling takes off from airfield, with others in foreground.

III. "The convoy got through." Convoy under attack from Italian planes and protected by HMS Nelson, Edinburgh, Hermione and Ark Royal (Operation Substance, Gibraltar to Malta, 21-27 July). Sunderland on patrol, alarm as pompom and high angle guns open up, Sparviero 79 crashes into sea. The stricken HMS Fearless burns in distance. Fairey Fulmar lands on Ark Royal.

IV. "Bombs!" Instruction at RAF Armaments School. Airmen learn about the various types of bomb (250 lb General Purpose, 250 lb Armour Piercing, 4 1/2 lb and 25 lb incendiaries) which Britain will use to get her own back on Germany. Demonstration of bomb-release and loading mechanisms. Bomb trolley on airfield prior to loading of Blenheim.
