WARWORK NEWS NO 2

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: S15 2).

Synopsis

I. "Factory beats bomber." a. A munitions factory damaged in a tip and run raid manages to resume production after only five days. Workers step through rubble to reach factory while victims of the raid sit smiling in hospital. RAF officer explains the impossibility of intercepting lone raiders but emphasises that the British are doing the same thing "more effectively" against Germany. b. Workers at another munitions factory arrive by special train. Women change into overalls, apply protective face-cream which is tinted and perfumed and 'equal to Elizabeth Arden' then begin work filling Oerlikon shells. Director-General of Filling Factories C S Robinson, "who knows his workers as human beings", pays tribute to their heroism.

II. "Biggest convoy reaches India." Arrival of huge convoy of reinforcements against the Japanese threat; disembarkation of troops including Dominion soldiers; landing of Bofors guns and other material. Congress leaders' rejection of Cripps' offer is attributed to disregard of the ugly facts and commentary adds: "We shall not abdicate at the behest of visionaries. The fighting Indians and common people know that on Britain they can rely for guidance, justice and generosity".
