Synopsis

Film on the role played by British forces in Cyprus, focusing on the balance between celebrations and the need to continue operations against EOKA.

Men of the 1st Battalion the Royal Ulster Regiment land from the Royal Navy's Type 15 frigate HMS Undaunted (F.53) off the coast, a detachment of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders goes on patrol and men of the 1st Battalion the Royal Berkshire Regiment prepare for their Christmas dinner. The presenter gives an overview of the island's history, interviews the General Officer Commanding British forces in Cyprus, Major General Kenneth Darling, and introduces a reconstruction of a typical British reaction to an EOKA attack. The governor of the island, Sir Hugh Foot, speaks briefly on the challenges faced by the Cypriot government in the late 1950s, and various British servicemen are interviewed briefly on their work and impressions of Cyprus.
