Unit of soldiers at ease on the quayside. A group of Japanese officers, each wearing a sword. View from the deck of a ship of soldiers and civilians forming up. A sailor standing at a deck rail looks at the group of Japanese personnel below. Group of Japanese with British troops disembarking down a gangplank in the background, the ship is probably Landing Ship Infantry (Large) HMS Queen Emma. A company of soldiers, probably Royal Marine Commandos, standing at ease. They march past camera. Two berthed warships, the nearest is the Landing Ship Headquarters (Large) HMS Bulolo with Japanese personnel in the foreground; marines march past. A parade square on the quayside; four senior naval and army officers arrive. A Union flag is unfurled; men on parade present arms or salute. A military band plays. View from the harbour of civilian crowds on the quayside. A British sailor with a Japanese prisoner (possibly a sailor) by the wheel of a small vessel. An old-looking truck laden with British sailors. British soldiers talking to a local policeman in an immaculate white uniform. Views from a moving vehicle of crowds of civilians lining the streets of George Town. Local children standing on a parked lorry. Sailors marching with sloped rifles at Glugor seaplane base; camera pans right to show a line of surrendered Japanese airmen standing in front of a hangar. A car arrives and a bearded naval officer gets out and is saluted by a Japanese officer. The naval officer walks along the line of sullen-looking Japanese personnel. Interior of the hangar; British officers inspect the seaplanes, probably Aichi E13As.

Notes

The Penang Turf Club was established in 1864, moving to a larger site in Batu Gantong in 1939. Racing was suspended with the Japanese occupation, but resumed almost immediately upon British reoccupation with a Grand Victory Meeting on 29 September 1945.

Glugor seaplane base became RAF Glugor, home to 1123 Marine Craft Unit. Was also used by the Short Sunderland flying boats of RAF 230 Squadron and RAF 240 Squadron.

The reoccupation of Penang was extensively covered by RAF photographers. See related items.
