SO THIS IS INDIA - AIRCRAFTMAN MURRAY GOES FORWARD (27/2/1945)

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: ABY 91).

Synopsis

A further instalment of 'So This Is India' in which Aircraftman 'Paddy' Murray goes by air to a forward airstrip.

A lorry reverses towards a waiting RAF Douglas Dakota transport aircraft (serial FD-788 'A'). Aircraftman (AC) 'Paddy' Murray gets out carrying his kit in two large bundles. The pilot, Pilot Officer Andrews, checks his papers as he boards the aircraft. The doors are closed. Repeat of Murray showing his papers, seen from inside the aircraft. Murray hands his bags to a man onboard the aircraft. Dakota taxiing. Dakota airborne. Shadow of the aircraft running over the ground. Murray and soldiers stepping down from the aircraft. An airman fixes a small ladder to the edge of the door so the men can step down. Close-ups of the men leaving the aircraft. Murray salutes an officer, who has his right arm in a sling, and shows him his papers. Murray walks away from camera, past a local Burmese woman rolling an oil drum. In a wooded area, a sign points to the Guard Room. Footage from a cookhouse under canvas with a meal being dished up. Close-up of a dish of anti-malarial Mepacrine tablets. Men sit on the ground outside to eat. AC Murray and Sergeant Goozee (an RAF cameraman with No.3 RAF Film Production Unit) go down to a river to bathe. Goozee, with very British modesty, wraps a towel around himself before removing his trousers. Murray and Goozee bathing. A Chevrolet CMP lorry pulls out on to a road and passes a sign reading 'Mandalay'. Close-up of the driver's cab. Close-up of the sign reading 'Mandalay' with two local Burmese children squatting on the ground next to it. A group of men leave a Buddhist pagoda and wander around. Two officers meet; one shows the other a file. Close-up of the officers (one of them Group Captain Goddard) who are obviously amused by the contents of the file. A sentry stands guard outside a pagoda housing Wing HQ (possibly RAF 906 Wing at Sadaung).
