RAF HEAVIES POUND BANGKOK (7/1945)
This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: ABY 121).
Synopsis
RAF Consolidated Liberator heavy bombers fly through monsoon weather conditions to strike at strategic targets in Bangkok, capital of Japanese-occupied Siam (Thailand).
Scenes of monsoon weather showing a road lashed by wind and rain, tents flapping, trees swaying and darkening skies. A parked RAF Consolidated Liberator heavy bomber has one of its engines wound over; the aircraft bears a large piece of nose art in the form of an image of a young girl named 'Miss Jeanette'. A tarpaulin is pulled off a Liberator's forward gun turret. Lorries pass parked aircraft. A spinning anemometer measures the strength of the wind. Water sprays from the runway as Liberators take off. Aerial footage of Liberators in flight. Aerial views of various target areas. Bombs seen falling from other aircraft and from the bomb bay of the camera plane. Explosions on various targets; some partially obscured by the smoke of previous impacts. Oblique view of a river (probably the Chao Phraya) running through Bangkok. More footage of Liberators in flight. Wind sock and trees. In the Watch Office the Duty Pilot opens a window. Two RAF fitters, one reading and the other smoking, suddenly get up. Liberators landing.
Notes
Dopesheet preamble boasts that the airmen of South East Asia Command 'keep up to double and treble pressure through monsoon conditions to smash Japanese strategic centres' and gives the targets as a power plant and supply dumps in and around Bangkok.
A short section of this film appears to be reused from ABY 39, which shows an attack on a port in Burma at Moulmein (Mawlamyaing). The tent seen in the opening also seen in ABY 118.
Photographs of an attack on the same target, though not necessarily from the same sortie, can be found at the reference below.
This footage is used, apparently in its entirety, in an edition of the Ministry of Information's 'War Pictorial News' newsreel dated 27/8/1945. See related items.
No slates and no date on dopesheets. Date is probably around July 1945.
